On Palm Sunday, 14th April, 300 volunteers from 56 organisations came together to pack 60,000 meals at Glossopdale's marvellous new school.
These included the following local organisations:
- Glossop 41 club
- Glossop Tangent
- The Church of the Immaculate Conception
- The United Reform Church in Tintwistle
- Glossop Army Cadets
- Glossop Police Cadets
- Duke of Norfolk Primary school
- Glossopdale School
The meals are destined for areas in Africa where malnutrition and starvation are rife.
The packs of six meals are delivered to schools to ensure that children attend school, especially the girls. Supplies of food are provided for a pupil's entire time in school. This ensures that they receive a full education and benefit in the long term and in many cases create self-sustaining communities.
The meals consist of rice, lentils, soya and a vitamin pack. This provides all the essential nutrition in one meal. The crucial vitamins sachets are bought from Kraft Heinz(KH) using KH’s annual donation to our partners, Rise Against Hunger (RAH), of $32,000,000.
Forty five rotary clubs have sponsored this event. We were partnered with Rise Against Hunger(RAH) and Feed the Hungry who provided all the logistics.
The ingredients cost $17,300(£14,100),
RAH have packed over 456,000,000 million meals around the world to date! Rotary in the UK have provided almost 500,000 meals in the past 3 years!
